How do we maintain a thick skin while navigating the world of social media?

  • I was prompted to read a post called: I quit social media for a week and it didn’t change my life., in one of my blogger support groups, (Black Bloggers United) on Facebook.
  • Please read the article for yourself. It’s a cool read. This reading led me to pose this question: how do we maintain a thick skin while navigating the world of social media?
  • Many bloggers, social media entrepreneurs and folks in general, struggle in this arena. How can you maintain a separate space for emotional sanity when all around you are people perpetuating a perfect life scenario?
  • The answer is you must have a strong core. Otherwise, everything this we see will leave us miserable. We are in different categories of life and thus our standing in life leaves us fully or partially fulfilled.
  • How do you build a strong Core? Find what inspires your spirit the most and dive into that area.
  • Additionally, find what is inspiring and bask in that aspect on social media.
  • There are times where I too, venture into a little ratchet television, social media postings and gossip blog sites, for kicks and giggles.
  • Some people who are fulfilled in life look for inspiration and social media is not always the fix for this.

Author, Jasmine Lamb, explored three areas where her life did change when she unplugged:

1. I read more—I buy new books as much as I try new lipstick, so, a lot. I finally got around to making a dent in some pretty crucial reads. Instead of stopping to take mental work breaks to scroll through my various timelines, I picked up a book instead.

2. I doubted myself less—Let’s face it, comparison is a total killjoy. Every time I felt I had made significant progress in my entrepreneurial journey, I’d stop to scroll through Instagram and immediately felt I was back at square one. Quitting Instagram allowed me to be more present in the everyday wins and look at my experiences as a continuous story that’s just as unique and valuable as anyone else’s.

3. My focus shifted—Not only was I more present, but I started to think of new ways to be creative in my “in-between” time, whether it was brainstorming new ideas to reach my business goals, choosing to meditate and re-affirm the day’s intentions, or having more real-time conversations with people I value in real life.

So, the question is, how do YOU maintain a thick skin navigating the world of social media?
